Natural Toenail Treatment Options

By Neo Miley

Tips for Choosing the Best Toenail Fungus Treatment

There is no need to run around with nail fungus as there are simple toenail treatment options that work.

The medical term for the fungal infection that affects both the fingernails and toenails is onychomycosis. While this condition affects both the fingernails and toenails, it is much more common in the toenails. There are some symptoms to watch for that may indicate that a toenail fungus infection is present.

The symptoms that are commonly seen are discolored nails, usually yellow or white, thick or brittle nails, a nail that has lifted from the toe, crumbly nails, or nails that curl either up or down or are distorted in some way. Depending on the severity of the condition, some of the symptoms can be rather painful.

Nobody is immune from developing the condition, but reports indicate that toenail fungus is most common in people over 60 years old. Additionally, people that have respiratory and circulatory conditions are at a higher risk than others for developing an infection. Another common condition, diabetes, is also associated with the development of toenail fungus infections.

Many times it's difficult to determine exactly what causes a toenail fungus infection. Sometimes its even difficult to even notice that an infection is present. If you suspect that you have a toenail fungus, you should visit your physician for a diagnosis. Your doctor will be able to identify the exact infection you have and recommend the proper treatment and medication.

Fortunately, there are a variety of medications and remedies available to treat a toenail fungus infection. The oral medications that are available work by promoting new nail growth that will replace the old, infected nail with a healthy new nail. These medications usually have to be taken for 6-12 weeks to cure the condition.

People with heart conditions or liver disorders should choose another course of treatment. Topical creams, like steroid creams, are available to treat some kinds of toenail fungus infections. However, using the creams exclusively is just not enough to cure the majority of infections that develop.

There are several things that can be done to take care of the nails that may help prevent the development of toenail fungus. Use shoes that provide good support for the foot and allow extra room for the toes. Avoid pointed toe shoes at all costs. Choosing socks that are made using 100% cotton and making sure they are clean and dry at all times will greatly reduce the chance of developing an infection.

A final piece of advice that will help keeping your toenails in good conditions is keeping them maintained at a short length. This helps to reduce trauma to the nail from banging against hard objects or the insides of your shoes while walking.
