Tungsten Carbide; What Divorce is Made of

By Chad Stevenson

Standing there in the now silent kitchen mindlessly gazing at the destroyed tungsten carbide ring on the floor and began to wonder; how did I ever end up in such a situation? The marriage had been doomed to failure from the start and the broken ring was symbolic of that fact. It felt like a different life though when we were discussing what kind of rings we'd decide on for the wedding. I remember everything we talked about that brought to the tungsten. Perhaps anything went differently at all we'd still be together today.

During the time we were dating our relationship seemed as strong as ever. We always found plenty of activities to do together and could chat for hours on end about nothing. It seemed clear to me that eventually we would get married so not even a year into the courtship I asked for her hand in marriage and so commenced the frenzy of wedding planning and married life.

The wedding rings seemed like one of her biggest concerns and for the first time it seemed we had a real disagreement on something. Though we both believed that wedding rings we the proper symbols of all the vows and dedication that goes into marriage, neither of us could agree on which ring would be most proper and so the great ring debate commenced.

Her choices were the pretty and conservative gold rings. I wanted to go with the more rugged looking tungsten. What I liked was that tungsten was supposed to be super hard and rated high on the Mohs scale of hardness. She argued back though saying scientifically that only made tungsten all the more brittle and likely tosplit in two. Buying the more malleable gold rings were the best choice for her.

It turned out I got my way in the end but that was the only time since. Our marriage spiraled out of control quickly and in the final argument, she threw her tungsten ring at me; breaking when it missed me and hit the tile floor instead. Now I stand over it; pondering all the decisions I had made, wondering if things could've been different.
