Don't Buy This Item - Excalibur Dehydrator 3500 Review

By Ella Hughes

They were such a hit (and I dried so many) that I even sold them to a local cafe. Everything I have dried has come out amazing. The fan does make noise but it's pretty quiet. I could still watch TV even with the Nesco running. The dial allows you to simply select the type of food you want to dehydrate. Thus you simply plug in the dehydrator and select the food.

I absolutely love the Nesco dehydrator. My old dehydrator had heat coils on the bottom and this one has the heat and fan on the top of the trays. I load and forget about it, it will take care of itself. I can do about 7 pounds of beef or turkey in one load, even when thick.

Don't worry, this is one of those times you get so much more than you pay for. Especially if you are like me and new to dehydrating, it's a great place to start. The color of the dried persimmon was vivid; the taste was more intense than fresh ones. Now I race with the birds, squirrels and ants so that they do not pick or ruin the persimmons. Now my kids, who are on special diets, can share jerky with me that I make. I absolutely love this dehydrator!

It is not something we use every day, but I'm sure it does well for drying out other things as well. The product exceeded my expectations. I would also recommend purchasing extra trays. The machine comes with 5 but I had to do two batches because all the meat did not fit in one go around (about 3 pounds of beef). I have dried veggies, fruits, made jerky and fruit leathers so far. It is easy to use, has great recipes and works well.

All told, if you're just looking for a decent, solid, cheap dehydrator and you don't mind the above issues for whatever reason, this is a great machine. I just wonder if maybe I should have spent a little more to get something a little more user-friendly as far as my own personal specifications go. I've had it a month and have enjoyed apples, bananas (like CANDY!), carrots, papaya, hot peppers as well as sweet potatoes for the doggies. I just got this for a Christmas gift for my husband and son; they got it early as my husband got an 8 pint the last day of KY season.

The thermostat is a great feature with which you can dial up any temperature you want. Also, having the heating element, fan on the top makes clean up a breeze. And if you leave it on anyway and come back later, the jerky will be OVER-dried and inedible. There needs to be a way to program "30 minutes more" so you can go on with your life.
