Satisfied Expectations - Food Dryer Dehydrator Critique

By Luke Watson

It does take about 5 hours to make the jerky, and we'll flip them every so often and soak up the grease, so you definitely have to keep an eye on it while it is going. But it is fun to make jerky with all along.

I'm up to 9 trays and for me that's as many as I'll probably ever need. It is nice to know I could add 3 more if I needed to and I have no doubt it would work perfectly with 12 racks. I make my own chicken & beef strip dog treats from local animals, so I know they are safe for my dogs. The FD-75PR 700-watt did an awesome job on the jerky as well as fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

They were awesome. The difficult part is cleaning the dried-on marinade off the trays - best to let them soak in the sink for a while, but we think it's worth it (I make him do it). I bought a vacuum sealer to vacuum pack the jerky, but he eats it so fast it's not necessary. I ended up reading millions of reviews for several days before committing to one. I chose this one because it was more watts than others in the price range and I can control the temperature and the good reviews on several websites seemed to be good. It will handle about 3-4 pounds of meat. I do rotate the trays once to insure even drying. I've dehydrated several batches of garden vegetables so far this season with great success using this machine. The batch was done in 6 hours. I just put a ball of meat in my hand and flattened it into thin circles. I load and forget about it, it will take care of itself. I can do about 7 pounds of beef or turkey in one load, even when thick. I probably should have sliced the fruit thinner and I will next time. My husband is begging me to do jerky! I made the mistake of buying a Ronco dehydrator and threw it out after 2 uses. I just got done making 10lbs of beef jerky and I have to say it came out delicious.

Other more expensive dehydrators have 5 year or even 10 year warranties, so I guess you have to figure out whether it is more cost effective to buy new Nesco dehydrators at random intervals or to buy a better quality dehydrator. We will probably be buying a better quality dehydrator.

I only rotate trays once during drying, if at all. It doesn't have an on/off switch or timer.

I bought an inexpensive timer at the local hardware store to compensate for the fact that it has no auto shutoff, so that takes care of that part. However, if you are buying this because you want to start incorporating raw food into your diet, then you may very well wish you had purchased an Excalibur brand instead.
