Dressing for Success

By Jessica Marie Sullivan

When you go for a job interview, it is very important to give a good, lasting impression. Research shows that first impressions are formed in less than ten seconds. More surprisingly, fifty percent of that impression is based on nonverbal cues. Interviewers not only judge you by your answers but also by the way you look. So, not only should you answer well but you should also dress well.

To have a clear idea on what to wear for your interview, know what kind of industry the company is part of. If the company has a website, check whether they have a dress code. This is very important especially when you're living in foreign country. Some countries have a different dress code for summer. Japanese companies for example don't require their employees to wear a tie and a suit jacket in the office. Not only is it more comfortable for the staff, but it also helps save energy.

If you really have no idea as to what dress code they have, they would probably want to see you in a business suit. Remember that it's always better to be overdressed that underdressed.

Fashion Advice

If you're interviewing in an advertising company, chances are you won't need to wear a suit. It's under the creative industry, so you need to show some creativity and personal touches to your outfit. This is a great chance to let your personality shine through without even talking about yourself. Impress your interview by wearing something fairly formal but still very classy. Here's an idea: a white button down shirt, dark grey trousers, a cardigan and an eye-catching midnight blue handbag. Make sure to wear trousers that fit really well. I personally like the range of trousers from Oasis. They're comfy and stylish. You can also find Oasis discount codes online if you want to save on shopping money.

If you're interviewing for a fashion magazine, be as fashionable as you want without looking tacky. Also, don't wear anything fake. It makes you look pretentious, dishonest and of course, fake. The fashion industry is quite big, so you might want to find out what type of fashion the company is in.

For conservative industries like accounting, finance and law offices, try to keep a simple and chic look. Wear minimal jewelry, black pumps, a white collared shirt and a black skirt-suit. Complete your outfit with a black bag.

Posture

Command attention with a good posture. It not only makes you look great, but it also instantly makes you feel better.

All the best on your interview!
