I purchased this product with somewhat uncertain expectations because I live in Singapore where the humidity is relatively high. The product documentation suggests that this product works well in countries with low humidity. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. This is one of those rare products that looks cool in the ads and then when you get it is even better than you expected.
I ordered one online last summer since my USB fan gave up; I didn't want to get another USB fan because I wanted something that would actually reduce the temperature rather than blowing the same warm air into my face. I was hesitant because of the price, but living in a hot place like Arizona, temperature control becomes a real necessity. It would be perfect if the handy cooler had some sort of constant rotational device that could make the cool air circulate more, but all in all, for what it's worth I couldn't be happier! The handy cooler does everything that it claims to do.
Using new batteries, it also keeps fading in and out. For the price paid, it's definitely not worth the purchase. It cools the air probably 10-15 degrees. I wish it could cool better, but a swamp cooler is simply limited to the humidity of the day, just like any other swamp cooler.
She does not tolerate the heat well and a friend sent this to her in late 2010, knowing we would be taking her Make a Wish trip later this year and thought it would help with heat related concerns. We tried it out last fall and it seemed to work great for the few moments we tested it. It uses water to cool the air like an evaporative air cooler. The hand strap design is really cool - you hold the handy cooler like a handy cam. It comes in a nice gift box and I'm considering getting a couple for my relatives for Christmas. Downside is they won't be too excited when you can only use it in summer! The eBay knockoff didn't cost much but when the filter didn't fit inside the unit it raised some questioning to how poorly they copied this handy cooler. After a mere 15 days, my Mini AC died on me. It just stopped working right in front of my eyes.
We got 2 for the family and so far so good. Description they provide actually matches the product which doesn't always happen and it seems durable. I normally can use it for about an hour before I need to "re-juice" the filter and if I forget; it will still work but just won't have the cooling effect. This is a well-constructed cooling fan and it's definitely one of the better desk fans I've owned. I ordered another one but a newer color one. It only lasted one day before stopping.
I wish I could have given it zero stars, but the review system would not let you. As a beauty therapist, I know how important it is to look after your skin and how much damage a fan or an a/c can do.
I would like to personally thank the makers of Handy Cooler for making life so much more comfortable! Handy Cooler cools the air for real, not exactly at the level of an actual air conditioner, but much more than any mini-fan.
