Harley Davidson Is A Synonym For Motorcycle

By Michael Paul

Especially in the United States, a Harley Davidson needs no introduction. Even the logo is almost universally recognized.

In fact, most owners won't say they have 'a motorcycle'; they just say a Harley. Even the company logo needs no identification, whether it is on a bike, a helmet, a T-shirt, or a school notebook.

Harleys are the stuff of legends and dreams, though a fortunate number of folks have the steel and chrome reality. People name their children and dogs after them, GIs far from home have a H-D classic on their wish list, and people who likely will never solo on a motorcycle are familiar with the name and all it implies. Only those who ride another brand of bike give reasons for their decision; those who ride a hog never have to explain.

The brand has a romantic history, starting almost as soon as people coupled engines with wheels. The first conception was a drawing done in 1901, and an actual racing bike was produced in 1903. The founders - Harley and Davidson - labeled their ten by fifteen foot workshop a motor company, but they built their first factory in 1906, issuing a catalog as well. The American success story has continued without interruption, with production being for the military during wartime.

The image that an H-D comes with is one of power and freedom. The rumble of more horses than you need is right between your legs, and the open road offers unlimited freedom to experience and explore. Who has not dreamed of leaving everyday life behind and heading to the unknown for adventure? Harleys can hold their own with eighteen-wheelers, fast automobiles, and all the weather the rider can stand.

Even donning a logo T-shirt can make you feel the possibilities. A dude in such a one is not out to play it safe, and a H-D chick is not out hoping to meet a financial advisor.

It is accurate to say that H-Ds made it easier to be a rebel. However, sober businessmen and adventurous women love them, too, and ride them. People who name their kids 'Harley' are not hoping they grow up to be social outcasts; they simply want to pass on the dream with all that is good about it.

One great way to understand what it is all about is to visit a dealership. The impact of a whole array of gleaming Harley Davidson cycles in every size, style, and color is a thrill you won't forget. Sit on the one that really lights your fire and you may decide the time is ripe to become the owner of a hog. Even going to the company website tells you that the hype has real substance behind it.
