The Tungsten Wedding Band Dance of Shame

By Chad Stevenson

When deciding upon getting married; wedding rings are always an important part of that decision. Selecting the best wedding rings for both people is even more important. While some go with traditional gold or silver; others will decidedly want to go with a tungsten wedding band. Why should one pick tungsten over gold or silver though? What will make one choice better than the next? Before you make any decisions think about some of the known facts on tungsten carbide.

You've heard of men's tungsten wedding bands before, right? If you haven't, it's cool because you aren't really missing out. Tungsten rings are the fool's gold when it comes to wedding rings. They are most commonly sold with the description of being very hard and difficult to break. This isn't true by far though and not only do they break, but are inconvenient and even potentially dangerous.

Rings made of tungsten carbide are no doubt some of the more over-hyped rings on the market today. One of the most proclaimed exaggerations of tungsten is how hard it is. Though it is gauged very high on the Mohs scale of hardness that only ensure you won't scratch or scuff it up. The fact that it's so hard means it can easily break when dropped onto a hard surface. Be aware of this misconception.

Not only do they break easily when dropped but they also they don't break fast enough in an emergency. Ending up in the emergency room with a swelled finger could be a bad night if you're in the room emergency room. Tungsten requires a special set of pliers to crack off a finger in the case of an emergency which not every hospital necessarily carries so end it at the wrong hospital you could realistically lose a finger.

Finally at last it's true that you can't even have your tungsten rings resized. Because they are so hard they aren't malleable like gold or silver rings so before you make any decision be sure you learn all the real facts on tungsten.
