You Can Do Better than Men's Tungsten Wedding Bands

By Chad Stevenson

When I get married, I know that there will be a lot of planning decisions to make. I love party planning and shopping so I really cannot wait to bring together these two activities. However, I think the toughest part will be picking out the wedding bands. There are so many unique decisions, from gold to silver and even tungsten. Triton tungsten rings are believed to be the strongest of them all. But recently I've been doing some research and men's tungsten wedding bands don't seem to be as they are marketed.

I was looking on a Facebook page called Broken Promises and looking through people's stories about how their tungsten wedding rings broke. So I started looking into it more and reportedly the extreme hardness of tungsten makes the ring brittle and allows it to shatter when dropped. I definitely do not want this ring to be a symbol of my everlasting marriage.

I additionally read that tungsten has been advertised as hypoallergenic. However, it is often alloyed with cobalt and nickel which are not hypoallergenic and can cause skin allergies. Cobalt and nickel react with oils in the skin to tarnish the ring over time so eventually, you would have to buy a new ring.

The most atrocious thing I read about tungsten was the fact that if you get a ring stuck on your finger, you will need to have your finger amputated. Hospitals do not have tools strong enough to cut Triton tungsten. I would not want my husband to go through something so terrible just because of men's tungsten wedding bands. I think I will be better off not choosing this kind of ring.

Tungsten is unable to be resized or engraved which are two very important features in wedding rings. Many people need their bands resized as they get older and personalizing my wedding ring is something that I've always wanted to do. It is obvious that the complications of tungsten are not for me and shouldn't be for anyone.
